Knowledge is Power: Understand the Lymphatic System to Promote Longevity

What is the lymphatic system?

A hydraulic network intertwined with muscles and tissue that moves fluid throughout the body, the lymphatic system is considered our cellular “sewer system” and supports waste elimination and the body’s immune system. However, it requires a delicate balance and frequently becomes sluggish and congested, resulting in lingering lymphatic fluid that we call edema. A buildup of edema can be present in isolated regions or globally in the body. Edema can cause an enlarged, swollen, or puffy appearance, redness, and even skin changes. It can cause pain and heaviness, aching where it is most concentrated – frequently in the arms and legs.

Chronic lymphedema can be caused by illness, injury, or surgery, and is a frequent complication after breast cancer treatments or lymph node dissections. When located in the head and neck lymphedema can cause brain fog, headaches, pressure, puffy eyes, double chin, and, when severe, difficulty swallowing and speaking. Abdominal edema can cause bloating, a firm round belly that is tender to the touch, and difficulty breathing. The pressure and feeling of your tissues filling like a balloon from the inside can cause anxiety and panic sensations as well. Lymphatic therapy consists of gentle manual lymphatic drainage, supportive compression wrapping or garments, education on the processes of the lymphedema condition, fluid-mobilizing exercises, and education on anti-inflammatory food choices. Treating your lymphatic system is sensitive and personal and as a Certified Lymphedema Therapist Maggie will do her best to support you on this journey to improve your cellular health.
